City of Eastpointe Firefighter in Eastpointe, Michigan

Position Summary

Under the direct supervision of the Captain and/or Lieutenant, participates in fire suppression, hazardous materials mitigation, fire prevention, emergency aid, basic life support, and general rescue activities.  Maintains fire, emergency and rescue equipment, apparatus and facilities and performs all other assigned tasks.

Essential Job Functions

Responds to fire calls, rescue and medical calls and other emergencies.  Participates in fire containment and suppression, and auto extrication or other rescue activities.  

Operates a wide range of fire fighting and rescue equipment, apparatus, tools, vehicles and other implements utilized in the line of duty.

Responds to emergency medical calls on a call-out basis.  Employs life-saving techniques at a basic life support level.

Maintains fire fighting and rescue equipment and apparatus in a ready status at all times.  

Completes standard preventive maintenance duties according to established schedule and keeps related records.

Assists in procuring and maintaining emergency medical supplies and equipment.

Properly collects and disposes of infectious waste generated at emergency scenes.

Performs salvage operations such as throwing salvage covers, clean up and removal of debris.

Assists in the maintenance of fire station facilities and grounds to ensure compliance with departmental standards.  Completes custodial and housekeeping duties, and participates in basic carpentry, plumbing and electrical projects.

Accurately and appropriately documents all emergency aid activity, as required by law, for state, county and departmental protocols.

Participates in training programs and drills and attends staff meetings.  Receives training in assigned areas of responsibility, including emergency medical and BLS, multiple casualty incidents, fire responder and related subjects.

Keeps abreast of modern fire fighting methods and current issues through continued training and professional growth.  

Maintains cooperative relations with other City departments and internal departmental personnel.  Attends workshops, and training sessions as directed.

Assists in conducting fire inspections, developing pre-plans and other fire prevention, firefighting and rescue activities.

Assists in the development and delivery of public education programs for CPR, basic first aid and general emergency medical assistance awareness.  

Presents programs to the community on safety, medical and fire prevention topics.

Performs other duties as required.

Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma.

Michigan Firefighters Training Council Certification as a Firefighter I and II

Basic Life Support Certification required, Paramedic License is preferred. 

State of Michigan Vehicle Operator's License.

Knowledge of the principles, practices and techniques used in fire suppression, prevention and rescue operations and associated safety procedures.

Knowledge of first responder techniques such as resuscitation, basic and advanced life support procedures, first aid and medical first response procedures and practices.

Basic knowledge of fire codes and other laws and regulations governing fire prevention.

Skill in the operation and maintenance of an array of fire fighting and medical responder tools, equipment and apparatus and other implements utilized in the line of duty.

Ability to adhere to an established command structure in standard and emergency situations and the ability to work effectively under stress in emergency conditions.
