Description of Job

This application is for all, current, open seasonal positions at the park. Please select which position(s) you are applying for.

VISITOR SERVICES TECHNICIAN: A customer service based position that involves working in a visitor center, greeting visitors, or may be assigned to work in the field in specialized duties. Daily interaction with park visitors requires effective communication and public relations skills.

  • Staff the park entrance station and/or the visitor center.

  • Provide information and assistance to visitors (distributes maps/brochures, orients visitors to park facilities and amenities, promotes education programs, educates on State Park regulations, etc.)

  • Provide information to the boating and non-boating public.

  • Sell parks passes, permits, books, maps, clothing, firewood and other novelties.

  • May sell gift certificates, search and rescue cards, boat registrations, OHV registrations and snowmobile registrations, fishing and hunting licenses.

  • Operate a cash register.

  • Answering of telephones and transferring/taking messages.

  • Photo-copying and filing.

  • Collects revenue, completes shift report and balances shift box at end of each shift.

  • May prepare campground reservations forms and documents.

  • May document and report visitor complaints.

  • Cleaning and light maintenance duties of interior and exterior of gates, visitor center and/or offices, including litter pick up.

  • May assist with special events or programs within the park.

  • Other duties as assigned

    PARK MAINTENANCE TECHNICIAN:Responsible for all general park maintenance and cleaning of public facilities including: restrooms, showers, vault toilets, campsites, picnic areas, trails, etc.

  • Operates and performs routine maintenance on State owned vehicles and equipment.

  • Assures quality customer service and facility maintenance, repair and cleanliness.

  • Provides information and assistance to visitors.

  • May assist with carpentry, plumbing, masonry, electrical work and transporting materials and supplies.

  • This position is required to utilize equipment such as pressure washers, hand tools, small power tools, shop vac’s, vacuums, park vehicles, and other equipment on a daily basis.

  • Employees will be required to wear personal protective equipment as necessary.

  • This position will be expected to assist with other maintenance duties including maintenance of equipment, facilities, and grounds with other assigned duties.

INTERPRETIVE ASSISTANT:This is a customer service based position that involves facilitating park interpretive and environmental education programs. Develop and present natural resources/historical related programs to park visitors. Specific duties include but are not limited to:

  • Schedule, plan and present Junior Ranger programs

  • Schedule, plan and present school and group programs

  • Schedule, plan and present campfire programs and guided hikes

  • Schedule, plan and present outreach programs

  • Provide roving interpretation in campgrounds and day use areas

  • Work with individual and group volunteers

  • May train volunteer naturalists

  • Work with other State, Federal and local agency naturalists

  • Market and promote attendance at programs

  • May develop brochures and other written materials

  • May work the visitor center front desk

  • May assist with special events or programs within the park

  • Collect, catalog, organize and protect park collections of slides, photographs, specimens, etc.

  • Attend assigned training sessions

  • Other duties as assigned

TRACK CHAIR PROGRAM:A customer service based position that involves working in the Track Chair Garage managing all aspects of the Track Chair Program. Daily communication with participants and volunteers requires effective communication and public relations skills. Specific duties include but are not limited to:

  • Working with the disabled community and people of different levels of ability to adapt and assist quickly to address their personal needs.

  • Participation in speaking engagements at libraries, support groups, fundraising events and more.

  • Schedules all reservations for the season through the reservation system and manages cancelations.

  • Managing a large base of volunteers with respect to scheduling volunteers for individual shifts, training all new volunteers, and recruiting new volunteers.

  • Leads hikes with participants if a volunteer is not available.

  • Promotes the Track Chair Program through media relations that involves contacting news agencies to do stories about the program and participating in interviews with news stations.

  • Must be present, visible and available while working at the park for visitor inquiries and provide information about the program.

  • Develop and grow the program through outreach to other agencies and forming partnerships.

  • Learns what equipment is needed to insure the comfort of the participant.

  • Works closely with the Friends Of Staunton State Park on fundraising for the program and ensuring the program has what it needs.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications, Substitutions, Conditions of Employment & Appeal Rights

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must have reliable transportation to and from work

  • A background screening may be required for placement in this position

  • Applicants may be disqualified based on some felony or serious misdemeanor convictions

  • Strong customer service and communication skills required

  • Must be able to perform, or with reasonable accommodation, the physical requirements as listed WITHIN JOB RELATED REQUIREMENTS

JOB RELATED REQUIREMENTS:

  • Track Chair: REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must be 18 years of age or older.

  • Must have a flexible schedule and be willing to work 40 hours per week.

  • Must be available for trips Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays but special events and speaking engagements will take place throughout the week.

  • Must have a current and valid drivers' license and reliable transportation

  • Possess strong interpersonal communication skills

  • Ability to work with little supervision

  • Must be confident speaking in front of large groups and must be comfortable speaking with members of the disabled community.

  • Must be able to understand and describe the program with an understanding of the history of the program.

  • Successful completion and passing of background screening may be required for placement in this position.

  • Must be self-motivated, be an accomplished public speaker and have good writing skills.

  • Must be able to work independently.

  • Possess strong interpersonal communication skills.

  • Maintenance• Must be at least 16 years of age.

• If position requires operation of a motorized vehicle, must possess and maintain a valid driver's license.

• Willing to work outside, sometimes in inclement weather.

• Must be able to lift 75-100 pounds repeatedly during the course of a single workday.

• Knowledge of power tools and hand tools preferred.

• Knowledge of small engine and other equipment maintenance and repair preferred.

• First Aid and CPR certifications may be required.

• Must be able to work various shifts, weekends and holidays.

• Possess strong interpersonal communication skills.

• Ability to work with minimal supervision.

• The park may provide some uniform items, however, employee may be required to

purchase some items at their own expense.

• Successful completion and passing of background screening may be required for

placement in this position.

  • PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: This position will perform physical activities that require considerable use of your arms and legs and moving your whole body, such as climbing, lifting, balancing, walking, stooping, and handling materials.

  • Visitor Center/Entrance Attendant will perform moderate levels of physical activity. Activities may include, but are not limited to, lifting, balancing, walking, standing, stooping, crouching, kneeling, reaching, and bending in different positions.
