Catastrophe Modeller

Aon is currently recruiting a Junior Catastrophe Modeller to join our Japan Analytics team in London. The team sits within Aon Reinsurance Solutions and provides Clients with advice on their exposures to natural disasters such as typhoons, earthquakes, and floods. The analytics team is responsible for the designing, assessment, valuation, and management of reinsurance programs. Comprised of actuaries, catastrophe modellers, engineers, financial analysts and GIS guides, our catastrophe modelling team is continuously looking for ways to evolve our Clients’ understanding and view of catastrophe risk. Large part of the responsibility will involve interacting with Analytics, Brokers, Clients and Global reinsurance markets throughout both the Japan market and the Asia-Pacific region. Using both traditional catastrophe models (RMS/Verisk) and Aon’s in-house modelling platform ELEMENTs, we use the power of modelling solutions to quantify the financial impact of natural and human-made catastrophes on our clients’ portfolios. This also includes developing tailored solutions for our Clients to best represent their portfolios and loss experience.

What the day will look like

Analytics support (client reports, meetings and presentations)

  • Working with brokers and actuaries to understand exposures, review modelling results, explain modelling limitations and resolve issues promptly

  • Provide technical solutions in a digestible manner to both internal and external stakeholders at client / reinsurer meetings, presentations and within reports. Catastrophe Modelling

  • Running client portfolios through natural catastrophe models to quantify the likelihood and severity of natural catastrophes for Client renewals.

  • Undertaking sensitivity testing to help Clients understand impact of data quality, data and modelling assumptions and any planned portfolio change.

  • Collaborating with academic and industry partners to validate and create innovative solutions for the (re)insurance market.

  • Knowledge sharing of market and model experience with the wider team.

  • Liaising and collaborating with other teams and offices worldwide.

  • Working closely with the model evaluation team to revise and challenge existing catastrophe models to deliver client views of risk that is more relevant to their business

    Skills and experience that will lead to success

  • Understanding of the science of natural catastrophes and ability to validate and interpret the modelled loss estimates.

  • Good analytical, interpersonal, communication and organizational skills

  • Strong work ethics

  • General insurance and/or reinsurance knowledge beneficial

  • Ability to communicate complex ideas and concepts.

  • Ability to be flexible in working to meet deadlines.

  • Ability to approach problem-solving in a practical and innovative manner.

  • Ability to maintain compliance with professional standards, where applicable, as well as company-wide quality initiatives

  • Strong project management, with capability to work in a team, independently, working under pressure, multi-task and ability to prioritise work effectively. Qualifications

  • BA/BSc or higher qualification ideally in, finance, statistics, geography, science or equivalent

  • Strong computer skills in MS Office suites (Excel, Word, Access and PowerPoint)

    Experience in the following an advantage:

  • Catastrophe modelling experience with vendor models (RMS, Verisk, CoreLogic) o Programming in SQL, R or Python o Experience with GIS.
