Position Overview:

We’re seeking a Senior Science & Engineering Mechanical Technician to work under the guidance of the Principal S&E Technicians. The technician will operate hydrogen brazing furnaces and provide general support for the brazing of production and experimental klystron and RF device components.

Given the nature of this position, SLAC will require onsite work.

Specific job Duties include (but not limited to):

  • Set up and operation of heat treat and hydrogen brazing furnaces for production and developmental klystron microwave tube components.

  • Plan brazing and heat treat operations of developmental, prototype and production assemblies with great precision and attention to detail.

  • Load assemblies on furnace base, connect thermocouples, and prepare furnace equipment for brazing.

  • Operate furnaces and program power and temperature controls, gas flow panels, and instrumentation.

  • Install, maintain and modify the instrumentation of furnace related systems, flow meters, and thermocouples.

  • Use hand and power tools to repair equipment and fabricate fixtures and equipment.

  • Perform all work in accordance with established safety and work planning and control procedures and continuously strive to ensure a safe working environment.

  • Work occasional irregular hours, as required, in support of project, program, operations, or maintenance schedules and goals.

To be successful in this position you will bring :

  • Five years of practical work experience in braze furnace operations, mechanical assembly, fabrication, and process controller programming or demonstrated ability.

  • Demonstrated working mechanical knowledge, mathematics, and related subject matter.

  • Working knowledge of hydrogen brazing techniques and general heat treatment procedures and equipment.

  • Ability to fabricate/assemble components including prototypes, and perform experimental apparatus set-up, testing, and equipment operation.

  • Working knowledge of shop math and the ability to calculate cumulative tolerances and interferences.

  • Ability to read and interpret GD&T and engineering drawings.

  • Experience using measuring instruments such as micrometers, calipers, height gauges, stress gauges, vacuum and pressure gauges, and temperature measurement devices.

  • Good interpersonal skills and strong communication skills, both oral and written

  • Ability to document and organize work using Microsoft office tools such as Outlook, Excel, and MS Office suite.

  • Demonstrated ability to work as part of a collaborative team and the ability to communicate in technical terms with engineers and scientists.

  • Must be capable of and committed to achieving the department’s mission in a safe and respectful manner, in compliance with applicable standards and regulations.

  • Must possess a valid California Driver's License and a good driving record.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience and/or background in the following is desired but not required:

  • Experience with TIG welding of vacuum devices.

  • Practical experience using vacuum processing equipment such as helium leak detectors.

  • Experience diagnosing complex problems with mechanical or electronic systems.

Physical requirements and working conditions:

Note: This position is represented by SEIU Local 2007 and the collective bargaining agreement between the university and SEIU Local 2007 governs the terms and conditions of employment.

The expected pay range for this position is $45.89 (Step 1) - $55.46 (Step 10) per hour. Placement in the range is subject to the applicable Collective Bargaining Unit. SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory/Stanford University provides pay ranges representing its good faith estimate of what the university reasonably expects to pay for a position. The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location and external market pay for comparable jobs.
