City of New York Senior Associate Director in New York, New York

Job Description

The New York City Department of Youth and Community Development (DYCD) invests in a network of community-based organizations and programs to alleviate the effects of poverty and to provide opportunities for New Yorkers and communities to flourish. The DYCD Office of Neighborhood Safety (ONS) puts communities at the center of public safety through crisis management, placemaking, and transformative programs in neighborhoods where gun violence is most prevalent.

The Office of Neighborhood Safety (ONS) manages a holistic array of initiatives aimed at improving quality of life and promoting peace in communities most affected by divestment and violence. We achieve this through equity in place-making and place-keeping of vital neighborhood spaces, a number of crisis-response initiatives that focus on gun violence prevention and community-based emergency response, and programming for youth, families, and adults that promote healthy and connected communities.

ONS programs are essential to supporting safety in communities. ONS executes its mandate through a diverse array of projects that span government agencies at the city, state and federal levels and may include non-profits, foundations, community groups and others. ONS programming is delivered through credible community-based providers that serve their neighborhoods with integrity, care, and high-quality programming. JOB RESPONSIBILITIES: The Senior Associate Director of ONS must be a proven manager and thought leader and demonstrate a substantial capacity for independent initiative while at the same time working creatively with a diverse assortment of City agency leaders, non-profit directors, community representatives, and external contractors. The Senior Associate Director will be responsible for providing strategic and programmatic leadership for the City’s related strategies to prevent violence and promote healthy, vibrant communities. The Senior Associate Director will report to the Executive Director and DYCD Leadership. Among the tasks that the Director will need to execute are:

  • Direct on-going work in the ONS portfolio related to place-based and community-centered programs,

    services, and networks to reduce violence and empower residents;

  • Overseeing the portfolio of contracts within ONS that relate to this work;

  • Provide fiscal, operational, and programmatic oversight to programs and services within the ONS

    portfolio including NeighborhoodStat, space activation initiatives, therapeutic services, school-based

    programming and more;

  • Managing staff members responsible for data reporting, community engagement, agency coordination,

    and problem solving;

  • Direct strategy and implementation of ONS initiatives to respond to the social determinants of

    community violence;

  • Cultivating and maintaining excellent relationships with stakeholder groups, other government agencies,

    community non-profits, advocates, family members, survivors, and justice-impacted individuals;

  • Representing DYCD and ONS at meetings with community-based, governmental, and business entities,

    among others.

  • Providing administrative support as needed, including contract management, preparation of meeting

    materials, and other duties as assigned.
