Within the Buildings Engineering Practice Area, the Sustainability and Building Performance team provides consulting services in support of high quality and high performance projects, including energy modeling, performance engineering, and energy management services. The service areas reflect the interconnected systems-based nature of sustainability, Building Performance Simulation, Energy Audits, Measurement & Verification services and support for Building Condition Assessments. Your Opportunity

Stantec is currently seeking a self-motivated engineer with specialized expertise in sustainable design, energy efficiency, building energy simulation, and sustainability accreditations. The successful candidate will work in collaboration with Stantec’s Sustainability and Building Performance team in Ottawa, and will be responsible for delivering simulation assignments, mentoring and developing energy modeling staff, and working with senior leadership to grow Stantec’s sustainability practice. Opportunities for collaboration with Stantec offices across the globe will be available.

The qualified candidate will have a background in energy-efficient system design and simulation, energy analysis studies, and energy management & incentive programs. A sound knowledge of HVAC and lighting systems, building control systems, building envelope design, energy conservation measures, greenhouse gas emission, and building energy simulation programs is expected. Exceptional communication skills, the ability to provide excellent client service and a commitment to sustainable design are essential for this position.

Your Key Responsibilities

  • Manage and deliver building performance and simulation assignments (whole building energy modeling, natural ventilation design, thermal comfort, CFD etc.), and greenhouse gas emissions analysis for new construction and existing buildings.

  • Prepare energy models using IES in support of sustainability accreditations such as LEED and WELL.

  • Undertake economic analysis of energy and carbon conservation measures include lifecycle cost analysis (LCCA).

  • Mentor and help develop energy modeling staff.

  • Identify strategies and solutions, for clients that improve energy performance, indoor air quality, and thermal comfort.

  • Apply building physics assessments to buildings and master plans (such as energy modeling, water budget analysis, daylighting analysis, thermal comfort, microclimate analysis, shading analysis, views etc.)

  • Support technical report writing efforts including data visualization. Prepare and deliver presentations to clients and/or design teams.

  • Propose future low energy solutions for new buildings including, potentially, on site renewable generation, demand side management, battery backup etc.

  • Prepare NECB Performance Compliance Path documentation for Building Permit submissions

  • Perform energy audits and consulting support for BOMA BESt, NEET, TAME, CaGBC ZCB Standard, etc.

  • Register, document, and deliver projects that have achieved third-party certification through rating systems to LEED V4/V4.1 and WELL v2

Qualifications

Your Capabilities and Credentials

  • Strong background in energy-efficient system design and simulation, daylighting, Green Building Certifications, energy analysis studies, and energy management & incentive programs.

  • Knowledge of climate change resilience and adaptation methodologies, whole of life asset strategies and design

  • Knowledge in Whole Life-cycle Carbon (WLC) Assessments, energy measurements, life cycle cost analysis, Gap analysis and feasibility studies

  • Sound knowledge of HVAC and lighting systems, building control systems, energy conservation measures, greenhouse gas emission, and building physics.

  • Eligibility for PEO membership as an EIT or P.Eng.

  • BEMP, CEM, LEED AP/GA, WELL AP credentials considered assets.

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills and an ability to provide excellent client service.

  • Awareness of any new technologies or methods that may increase sustainability and continually recommending cost-effective and environmentally friendly practices

  • A commitment to sustainable design is essential for this position.

  • Strong professional verbal and written communication skills -ability to communicate in a timely manner appropriate with clients and building design team members.

  • Knowledge in achieving corporate goals for energy reduction, green energy adoptions, or GHG reduction, including progress toward Net Zero goals or Science Based Targets is considered an asset.

Education and Experience

  • Degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field. Specialization in sustainability is considered an asset.

  • 3 years of experience in energy-efficient system design and simulation.

  • Experience with simulation software including IES , eQUEST, TRNSYS, EE4, and/or EnergyPlus.

  • Experience with RETScreen, eQUEST, TRNSYS, EE4, and/or EnergyPlus considered an asset.

  • Experience with thermal comfort analysis, CFD (for natural ventilation and displacement ventilation), daylight simulation, life-cycle cost analysis, and/or existing building auditing preferred.

Typical office environment working with computers. Field work may include exposure to the elements including inclement weather.
