About the Indiana Law Enforcement Training Board:

The Indiana Law Enforcement Training Board is the governing body of the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy, located in Plainfield, Indiana. The Board is comprised of 17 members, who have been appointed by the governor. The board sets the requirements and criteria for the basic training of law enforcement officers throughout the State of Indiana, which became mandatory in 1972.

Salary Statement:

The salary for this position traditionally starts at $59,800.00 but may be commensurate with education or work experience.

A Day in the Life:

The essential functions of this role are as follows:

  • Conduct basic hands-on training as well as specialized courses for new recruits.

  • Perform physical training and conditioning assessments for the trainees.

  • Certify police officers designated by their department on specialized training like emergency vehicle operation, firearms, criminal investigations, jail officers’ course, new Chief of Police training, etc.

  • Research, develop, and update training curricula and lesson plans.

  • Recommend modifications to curriculum of other law enforcement training programs.

  • Determine certification status of trainees.

  • Counsel, tutor, and provide special guidance to trainees as needed.

  • Serve as Academy coordinator for training conducted by other agencies utilizing academy facilities.

  • Attend various workshops, seminars and reading professional journals to keep abreast with the latest in the field of correctional training.

  • Recruit, select, onboard, and train employees to ensure role responsibilities and expectations are clearly understood while providing opportunities to continue professional development.

  • Set expectations, measure progress, provide ongoing feedback, and evaluate the performance of employees. Ensure work adheres to quality standards, deadlines, and proper procedures.

What You'll Need for Success:

You must meet the following requirements to be considered for employment:

  • High School Diploma or High School Equivalency (HSE).

  • Graduate from ILEA basic training program.

  • Five (5) years full-time professional experience in corrections, education, in-service training, or related experience.

  • Specialized knowledge of the various programs offered by the academy including all specialty areas (e.g., firearms, defense tactics and emergency vehicle operation).

  • Specialized knowledge of training and educational methods, techniques, practices, principles, and group dynamics.

  • Ability to conduct training analysis, needs assessments, and post-training effectiveness.

  • Ability to organize and present material in lectures, demonstrations, discussions, and self-study formats.

  • Ability to obtain certification as a trainer in specialized subject area(s).

  • Ability to delegate work, set clear direction, and manage workflow.

  • Ability to effectively give feedback, provide guidance or corrective action, coach, and develop employee skillsets.
